Former police officer jailed for raping a woman

A former police officer who raped a woman he met at a nightclub in 2012 was sentenced to eight-years imprisonment by the Lautoka High Court yesterday.

The 40-year-old man was convicted of one count of rape and one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The court heard that on October 27th in 2012, the former officer met a woman at a nightclub in Nadi during the early hours of the morning and persuaded her to go with him to his quarters on the pretext of getting more money.

However, when they got there he raped the woman in one of the single quarters which was vacant at that time.

High Court Judge Justice Paul Madigan while sentencing the man said that a father of two very young children at the time should not have been drinking at 3am.

The man has been sentenced to eight-years imprisonment with a minimum term of seven years for rape while for the attempt to pervert the course of justice, he has been sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment.

Both sentences will be served concurrently.
