Five lives have been lost in accidents in our waters over the past three years.
Maritime Safety Authority Chief Executive Captain Philip Hill has confirmed one incident has involved a crew member who fell overboard and was not found, another one lost a leg and died afterwards while three others passed away when a cargo boat they were in, sank in the Yasawa’s
Captain Hill says investigations were carried out and measures have been put in place to ensure safety at sea going forward.
“Investigations have been done and there have been measures put in place, for the MLC Kaiwai that one is still pending. That needs to go into a court of enquiry and that’s where the court will decide on what penalties to give. The case with the crew that fell overboard on Nabouwalu that has been closed and compensation has been provided to the victim.”
Meanwhile, two investigators are looking into the opening of the roll-on roll-off ramp of the MV Liahona II while it was on its way to Kadavu last week.
Captain Hill has confirmed the results of their investigation could be known in the next two weeks.
