The Ministry of Fisheries will continue to impose bans and strict control measures on species that are vulnerable and need protection.
Minister Responsible, Semi Koroilavesau says in the coming months, there will be a review on the current size and catch limits.
Koroilavesau says this will be an ongoing activity, aimed at establishing a more viable catch size for fish species.
” This initiative will ensure that fish are harvested at a size that allows for sustainable recruitment to occur within stock. Precautionary approach allows for the protection of venerable species during uncertainties, at times managers are faced with a task of trying to find the balance supporting commercial activities against the loss of vulnerable species.”
He add they will ensure there’s sustainable harvest of marine resources.
There is currently a marine inventory survey being conducted which is a collection of scientific data that allows the ministry to address the threats faced by our vulnerable coastal areas and its resources.
