106 families lose homes to fires so far this year

One-hundred and six families have lost their homes to fires so far this year.

The National Fire Authority said they’ve responded to multiple fires that could have been avoided if precautions had been taken.

NFA Chair John O’Connor reiterates that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“Firefighting is very effective and safe when we’re provided information early. Members of the public say they’re not sure of the number to call but the quickest way to get to NFA is to call 910.”

Chief Fire Officer Qionilau Moceitai says the majority of incidents this year were caused by electrical faults.

“With regarding our stats for the causes, the most cause that we had is electrical fires. This is composed of 32% of the total structural fire that happened. The second one is arson.”

There were 158 structural fires in 2018 – of which 145 were house fires.
