The Fijian Elections Office says that by this time next year they will be able to issue a fixed number of venues for polls.

Elections Supervisor Mohammed Saneem says these venues will have certificates to confirm whether they are pre-poll or polling venues.

He adds there is currently 1682 provisional polling venues listed with the FEO and is expecting more than 300 new ones.

Saneem says the new polling venue locator application will determine how many more provisional venues they will need to adopt.

“So far based on our assessments we’ve reduced the pre-poll to 552 from i554 in 2014 notably the Tavualevu High School is no longer a pre-poll but a polling day venue and on election day we have increased that to 306 new venues to allow more spreading of voters to centers nearby so in total, the number of venues on election day is 1130 compared to 822 in 2014.”

Saneem says the 2018 general election is expected to have more than 2000 polling venues excluding the postal stations.
