FCCC to review shipping and freight rates

May 23, 2019 7:35 am

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission will review the fare and freight rates this year as it was last reviewed in 2013.

Chief Executive Joel Abraham says they have not received any complaints in this regard however, they’re being proactive to avoid any disappointments both from passengers and vessel owners.

This was highlighted while making submissions to the parliamentary standing committee on Natural Resources yesterday.

“We are trying to ensure that the rates that are there are fully reflective of the market. We are also ensuring that we are up to date with where the market is. In 2010 when the Fiji Commerce Commission came about as part of a reform, we were looking at orders that were there from 1992. What we are doing now is picking up on those orders and reviewing them.”

During the submission, committee member Jale Sigarara also highlighted that Fijians are forking out more money to transport their goods.

Abraham says these are some of the reasons they’re conducting the review.

“For the last six years, the fares and freight rates haven’t changed. While the vessel operators may come up say this hasn’t changed, and this is all to the advantage of customers, because rates have remain constant over a long time.”

The FCCC also revealed that fare and freight prices of certain routes which were applicable in the 1990’s will also be changed under this review which will be conducted later this year.
