Diabetes Fiji is urging people to take advice from awareness campaigns seriously to prevent themselves from getting the killer disease.

Chair, Dr Jone Hawea says in Fiji, one person in every eight hours is amputated in hospitals.

Hawea says people should be proactive in looking after their health.

He says with diabetes being a lifestyle disease, people need to make changes to their diet.

“Lately there doesn’t seem to be any movement towards the positive and we’re still doing the best we can to try and reduce the rate of amputation and realistically the ages are getting younger. It’s about people owning the health messages and all these health promotion activities. Education awareness that continue to happen year in and year out.”

Dr. Hawea says people are turning to cheap unhealthy alternatives rather than making healthy choices.
