A new World Health Organization report suggests depression will be the next killer disease by 2020.

Lifeline Fiji Coordinator Jeremaia Merekula says mental health is a growing issue and needs urgent attention especially when it comes to our youth.

“As we see, Mental Health and suicide prevention is important and that is why here at Lifeline Fiji, we are trying to combat suicide by raising awareness on the importance of Mental Health and taking care of your mental wellbeing.”

Merekula says the increasing number of deaths due to depression is a concern.

He says in every 30 to 36 hours a person in Fiji attempts to commit suicide.

Lifeline Fiji has received more than ten thousand calls since its inception in 2016 with more than fifty percent of the callers being men.
