De-silting work underway in Rakiraki

De-silting work has begun in the Nakauvadra River in an effort to minimize the impact of flooding in Rakiraki town.

Minister of Waterways Mahendra Reddy says this is a huge boost for the people of Rakiraki while commissioning the work yesterday.

Reddy says Rakiraki has been severely affected during the recent floods this year and hopes are high the desilting project will lessen the impacts of flooding.

“Infrastructure gest affected, gets damaged, peoples life gets affected, school children are not able to go to school and the entire township comes to a standstill, those days is going to become a thing of the past.”

The $1.3 million dollar project will take four months to complete.

Reddy says they’re committed in trying to mitigate the impact of flooding for the people of Rakiraki.
