Fiji is a sea locked country meaning it has no land borders, hence, there is limited natural resources, which is why, the tourism industry is focusing on sustainability.

Permanent Secretary for the Tourism Ministry, Shaheen Ali says if resources are preserved and sustained only then can the industry be profitable.

Ali says cruise passengers that come from other countries are mindful of the environment and Fiji needs to be able to meet the demands.

“So once they see that a country has focused on its environment, and surroundings they themselves will pass on the message to their fellow nationals that Fiji’s tourism industry is sustainable which will encourage more tourists to come.”

Ali says in order to ensure the sector is sustainable, there are efforts underway to reduce its carbon footprints as well.
