A 59-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years and 2 months imprisonment for raping an 8-year-old girl.

The court heard that the man knew the victim.

The man raped the girl while they were watching television at the victim’s home in a village.

The attack occurred in April last year.

High Court Judge Vincent Perera while sentencing the man said that the man breached the trust of the victim and exploited her vulnerability.

The man has been sentenced to a non-parole period of 10 years and 2 months.

He has 30 days to appeal.
