Man charged for allegedly selling minors to go on trial

Josevata Werelagi appeared before Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge at the Suva High Court today.

A 38-year-old man charged with allegedly selling minors for immoral purposes is expected to go on trial soon.

Josevata Werelagi appeared before Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge at the Suva High Court today.

Werelagi is charged with one count of aggravated sexual servitude and three counts of domestic trafficking of children.

He is also charged with an alternative count of selling minors under the age of 18 for an immoral purpose.

It is alleged that between July 18th and the 22nd in 2015, Werelagi threatened or forced a 15-year-old girl to enter into or remain in sexual servitude.

It is also alleged that between the same dates, he facilitated the transportation of a 15-year-old girl from Nausori to Rewa Street in Suva, with the intent that the girl will be used to provide sexual services.

This morning the state informed the court that there are no admitted facts and they can proceed with the trial presenting three witnesses.

The state lawyer also indicated that the bulk of the evidence will be coming from the witnesses and investigating officers.

The matter has been adjourned to May 2nd.
