Colombian National Aiden Alec Hurtado
Colombian National Aiden Alec Hurtado who was convicted in 2017 for unlawfully importing cocaine to the country appealed his case in court today.
Hurtado’s lawyer informed the court that base on his submission, Hurtado should be granted leave.
The lawyer says the main issue is the knowledge of the possession of the hard drugs.
He says they need to see whether Hurtado’s confession was voluntary and also take into consideration that Hurtado’s English is poor and they should be allowed to argue the matter in full in court.
Hurtado’s lawyer mentioned that there are no guidelines as far as hard drugs is concerned and Hurtado’s sentence should be based on the purity of the drug.
Hurtado was found guilty for the unlawful importation of 20.5kg of cocaine into the country and was sentenced to 13 years and 11 months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 11 years and 11 months.
The purity of the cocaine was 89% and had a street value of more than $6 million.
