Court orders medical examination for rape accused

Suva High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo has ordered that a 31-year old labourer be medically re-examined after he alleged that he was beaten up during an investigation.

Laitia Nalawa who has been charged with one count each of rape and assault with intent to commit rape, burglary and theft alleges he was beaten by police.

He alleges he was assaulted by Police before and after he was interviewed.

However, there was no indication of an alleged assault.

Justice Temo ordered that Nalawa be medically re-examined at a time convenient to Corrections authorities.

Nalawa is alleged to have raped a nine year old student in Nakasi, Nausori last month.

The case has been adjourned to September 25.
