The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that they are providing consular assistance to the family of Australian national Jennifer Ann Downes.
Downes is the victim of an alleged murder at Service Street in Suva yesterday afternoon.
Traditionally the Australian government provides such assistance which may include support and guidance to families and liaison with local and Australian authorities to assist with funeral arrangements or repatriation costs.
Australian Embassies have no authority to intervene in local judicial matters, conduct local investigations, or pay for funeral costs.
