Communities encouraged to work with Police to address crime rate

The increasing crime rate in the Southern division is a concern for the Fiji Police Force with 2781 cases reported in the first half of this year.

Director of Community Policing- SSP Waqa Cavuilati says the major issue is violence against women and children.

He says it’s usually the family members of the victims who are the perpetrators and the force will continue working with communities to combat this.

“Part of our community policing is we want to have a service-oriented community policing in Fiji. So we need the community to come on board and help us enhance that community policy service-oriented approach.”

He says these crimes cannot be curbed by police along with the help from community leaders needed.

He says people living in communities also need to become advocates and report a serious crime like domestic abuse at the earliest.
