Fijians have witnessed incredible things since Fiji last marked the Year of the Pig in 2007.

The Pig is the twelfth animal of the 12-year cycle which appears in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar.

Welcoming a new Chinese Year in Suva yesterday, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says both the Chinese community and

Fijians have achieved a record-breaking economic growth.

Bainimarama says with the help of its Chinese counterpart, Fiji has experienced significant growth bringing in many opportunities.

“The opportunities for higher education, for employment in new and innovative industries and career paths, and for achieving the Fijian dream of personal success and fulfillment, have never been greater.”

The Prime Minister says Fiji has seen the implementation of a revolutionary constitution that has guaranteed equality for every Fijian, regardless of who they are or where they come from.

“As we move forward the Chinese Fijian community has been an invaluable partner in our nation’s development and through the course of 165 years, your community has been proven to be an integral part of our society.”

Bainimarama says support from both communities over the years has helped Fiji lay a foundation of prosperity and stability.
