China gives more sewing machines to Fiji

The Ministry of Women and Social Welfare today received more than 600 sewing machines from the People’s Republic of China.

An official signing for the hand-over of the machines was held today between the Minister for Social Welfare Dr. Jiko Luveni and China’s Ambassador to Fiji Huang Yong.

Dr Luveni extended the Fijian government’s gratitude to the Chinese government for the new sets of machines, which will be in addition to the 2, 200 sewing machines, 20 industrial machines and 5 over-locks donated by China over the years.

She says, to date, the Ministry has assisted over 1,700 women’s groups in the rural, peri-urban and informal settlements with the donated items from China and other countries.

The Chinese Ambassador says the new sewing machines will help hundred of women achieve self-worth through their creative work and benefit hundreds of families.

Huang Yong says the Chinese government is as always, willing to provide assistance for the welfare and happiness of the Fijian people.
