Cane farms to soon get drainage work

Cane farmers will soon be assisted for drainage work on their farms.

Minister for Waterways, Dr Mahendra Reddy says improved drainage will increase farm yields which means more income for rural farmers.

Dr Reddy says drainage work has been planned based on the need of the farmers.

“We want to finish this work well before the cane cutting season starts. So we need assistance from members of the public in terms of coming forward to tell us what level of drainage work that they need to be done in the field, in the sugarcane farms.”

Dr Reddy says work on infield sugarcane farm has begun. There are six drainage work in progress in the Northern division while 17 in the Western division.

The Minister is reminding sugarcane farmers to register for drainage assistance with their office if they have not done so.
