Brothers cop 7 years for rape

The Suva High Court has sentenced two brothers to 7 years imprisonment for raping a boy under the age of thirteen.

The incident happened in the Central Division from January 2013 and June this year.

The Court heard that the first accused, a 21-year-old farmer committed the offence between 1st January 2013 to 31st December.

The Court heard that the victim had gone swimming with his grandmother when the accused allegedly called him to a nearby bush and raped him.

The second accused a 29-year-old farmer committed the offence on several occasions between January 2013 and June 2014.

The Court heard that on the first occasion, he had called the child to massage his legs and then later raped him.

On the second occasion, the victim was picking rubbish around his house after school when the accused called him inside the house and allegedly raped him again.

High Court Judge P Kumaratnam in his ruling said the two accused were related to the victim and committed the offence in the same settlement which they regard as their home.

The Judge also noted that the two accused had apologized in a traditional manner to the families and had no previous convictions.

The two are eligible for parole after 5 years.
