ACCF makes payment to victims of school accidents

The Accident Compensation Commission has made its first payment to victims of school accidents.

This follows the extension of the no-fault compensation scheme to school accidents.

The Accident Compensation (School Accidents) Regulations 2018 came into effect from 01st January this year.

The payments are for two separate accidents.

The first accident occurred on 20th February 2019, where a student playing Rugby collided into another player resulting in serious injuries to his jaw, including fractures.

Given the extent of his permanent incapacity, the student was paid $21,000 in compensation.

The second school accident occurred on 18th July where a student was assaulted and lost his teeth.

Given the extent of his permanent incapacity, the student was paid $3,000 in compensation.

Since the beginning of this year, the Commission has received a total of 162 school accident notification, 87 injury applications, 2 death notifications, and 2 death applications.
