June 20, 2018 4:57 am

Around 700 families living in informal settlements in the Central and the Western Division now have access to reliable and affordable electricity.

This comes after they received solar powered household electrical kits through a project funded by the New Zealand Aid Program.

NZ High Commissioner to Fiji, Jonathan Curr says they’re working with Pacific neighbours on mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Curr says the NZ government is pleased to partner with the Fijian Government on this climate change project, which promotes the use of renewable energy to improve the quality of life for residents of informal settlements.

He says the programme provided a funding of $700,000 through the Climate Change Division, for the purchase and distribution of solar powered home electrification kits.

Recipients have been urged to make good use of the solar kits, which is designed to improve the home environment, and provide light and power for their families.
