In an effort to combat the growing litter problem, the Ministry of Waterways and Environment is now training Litter Prevention Officers.
Line Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy says their aim is to train five hundred officers in various divisions.
He says they want to have certified officers on the ground as they want to enforce Litter Act and Amended Drainage Act which allows for penalties to be imposed on those caught littering.
“At the end of the training today they will be formally given certificate for being litter prevention officers so with that certificate they will be empowered to issue infringement notice.”
A similar training will also be conducted in the Western and the Northern divisions in order to build the capacity of other Public Officers within the two divisions under this Initiative.
