A man who raped a family member on at least 3 occasions has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.
The perpetrator must serve 12 years before parole.
The Lautoka High Court heard that he preyed on his brother’s step-daughter where the extended family all lived together.
He threatened to kill the victim and chase her family out of the house if she ever told anyone – and took advantage of her whenever he found an opportunity.
Judge Justice Thusara Rajasinghe in his sentencing stated that the abuse of children for sexual gratification needs to be addressed promptly and effectively – not just through the judicial process but social intervention as well.
The victim dropped out of school as a result of the rapes and was also sidelined by many family members.
