Melanesian Games starts today

Competition at the Melanesian games will be at its peak when the 10 competing countries converge at the ANZ Stadium today.

Close to 600 athletes will be giving it their best with the meet being their last chance to secure a spot for the Olympic Games next month.

Fiji is ready to host the 2016 Melanesian Games, the first in seven years with top athletes from Melanesia in the country for the event.

Team Fiji Manager, Kelvin Yee says they are for sure going to get tough competition from all participating nations.

“This is one of the events that is recognized as a qualifier to Rio. We are expecting about 20 strong athletes from Papua New Guinea. They are getting their elite athletes.”

The games begin at the ANZ Stadium today.
