An own goal from Oghenekaro Etebo, set to play at Stoke next season, broke the deadlock just after the hour, with a penalty from captain Luca Modric with 20 minutes left securing three points for Zlatko Dalic’s men.
Croatia now leads Group D with three points being the only team to have managed to secure a win.

Argentina is second with one point.
Group C sees France and Denmark leading with three points each.
In other match played earlier, Denmark beat Peru 1-nil, France beat Australia 2-1 while Iceland held Argentina 1-all.
