WWF wants enforcement on turtle laws

The World Wildlife Fund has called on the Government to help in monitoring black markets which exist in the sale of turtles.

The WWF says there is a need to enforce the existing regulations.

Marine Species Officer Merewalesi Laveti says the recent incident in Tailevu has indicated that people are still involved in the illegal sale of turtles.

“We have been working togather with the Department of Fisheries in the past few years in the need to improve or step up on the enforcement on the existing Turtle Morotarium.”

The current law prohibits the sale of turtles, its meat or its derivatives.
