Tropical disturbance could become category 1 cyclone

December 14, 2016 4:32 am

The tropical disturbance to the Northwest of Fiji has a higher chance of developing into a Tropical cyclone in the next 72 hours.

Director Meteorological Services, Ravin Kumar confirms TD04F could become a Category 1 or marginal Category 2 cyclone later in the week.

However, the more immediate concern is heavy rain forecast for the Fiji group which could lead to flooding of low lying areas as the ground is already saturated.

Kumar says the current lull in the downpour is temporary and will only last a few hours.

Tropical disturbance TD04F was located about 290km southwest of Rotuma or about 430 km north-northwest of Nadi at 1pm today.

It is currently slow moving with an associated trough of low pressure and active rain bands which continues to affect the country.

TD04F is gradually deepening and expected to become a tropical depression by tomorrow.

It is expected to gradually move southeast towards the Fiji group from tomorrow.

Localized heavy rain will lead to flash flooding.
