There is not enough respect for older persons: Massey

October 5, 2018 12:39 am

The country’s older population is expected to increase further over the years.

United Nations Human Rights Regional Representative, Dr Chitralekha Massey says the UN believes a global response which can focus on protecting the rights of older persons is needed.

She says a major challenge faced by the residents at the Old Age homes is discrimination and they don’t get much respect and love from the society.

“The fact that we are now looking at being an active member of the society and once being isolated and abused , to me that gives a message that there’s not enough respect because if you had that respect we wouldn’t be having the figures we are looking at.”

The Old People’s Home in Samabula today marked the “International Year for Older Person 2018”.
