Stakeholders to work together: FWRM

The Fiji Women’s Rights Movement has analyzed data from the past three years which shows that the youngest victim of rape was a six month old baby.

Executive Director, Nalini Singh says that dress code is not a factor that leads to rape.

Singh believes it is the mentality of the accused as the incident also happens with children and women with disabilities.

Singh says after analyzing data from 2016 to 2018 they discovered that there was a case in 2016 which involved a 10-year-old girl with disability and in 2017 a case involved a woman with disability.

“The age of the majority of the victims/ survivors is around 17-years-old and this is consistent when we compared the data from last three years. The age of the youngest victims has shifted as well. In 2016 it was 3-years-old and last year it was a 6-month-old baby.”

Singh says the statistics are really disturbing and there is an urgent need for all the stakeholders to work together to address the issue.
