With the Fijian Economy growing rapidly, the shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry remains an issue.

Construction Industry Council President Gordon Jenkins says one of the major reasons for the shortage, is people regarding the construction work as unimportant or inferior to office jobs.

He says more people are opting for white collar jobs compared to blue collar jobs.

“A lot of them treat working on a job as a bit of a downer, it’s disadvantaging, a lower level and therefore we need to, and including the council raise awareness that this type of work is not the rock bottom work but it’s quite valuable.”

The council says experts are brought in from Indonesia and Philippines to meet the shortage in the country.

He says more awareness is needed so Fijians realize the importance of the construction industry.
