Report child labour cases: Usamate

June 20, 2018 7:40 pm

The Employment Ministry is working together with relevant agencies to monitor child labour in all working sectors in the country.

This has been highlighted by Minister responsible Jone Usamate as he makes an urgent plea to the public to report any child labour cases to the Ministry.

The Minister says they have discovered that child labour is usually considered a minor issue in Fiji.

However, this shouldn’t be the case as Child Labour is a huge concern in developed countries.

The Minister says a few child labour cases are reported every year, however, the close cooperation with other agencies will help identify more cases.

“But we have a good programme that has been going here and we have processes and also we have set up inter-agencies committees in all of our different regions, with the Ministry of Education and Police to identify cases of child labour.”

Usamate says they will continue to provide surveillance in businesses and companies to ensure a child labour free society.

Earlier this month, the Ministry confirmed they have been able to identify 200 cases of child labour since 2011.
