“The people still look at disability as a product of charity, that you’ll have to assist them. They are not capable of much…it’s more on charity mode.”

Rachel Sahay is a volunteer and is concerned that not everyone is aware of the role of a volunteer.

“Other volunteers – young people they do not know where to start from to be a volunteer. They do not have any ideas, they are just sitting at home.”

However, the National Volunteer Centre Project Officer Neil Maharaj says there has been some increase in the volunteer numbers when compared to previous years.

“As of last five or six years, we have seen that there has been a major boost in youth volunteering, we have seen an increase in youth NGO’s that are opening up, the new youth groups that are coming about and there are a lot of youth movements in the last few years.”
