“The last two decades of neglect by parents have unfortunately resulted in an irreversible damage. I urge all parents to spend quality time with their children an hour at least will make a difference in terms of asking them what they learned today of school.”

Dr Reddy says the onus is not only on the teachers in schools to teach children but parents who could help tremendously by nurturing their learning with additional learning materials.

He made these comments during World Literacy Day yesterday in Suva.
