The Pacific Island Development Forum believes the climate deal at the COP21 in Paris France is the best that it could have hoped for.

One of the lead negotiators for the PIDF, Dr. Mahendra Kumar says most member countries have made commitment which – if delivered – will mean a lot to small island states.

Dr. Mahendra Kumar was part of the Pacific Island Forum Delegation lobbying for the best in Paris, France.

Dr. Kumar says the outcome – although not legally binding, is very close to the aspiration of the developing countries and small island states suffering from climate change.

He says there are checks and balances in place to ensure that Developed nations keep to their promise to reduce carbon emissions.

Dr Kumar adds that countries like Fiji and Kiribati and other South Pacific neighbours can also make use of one hundred billion dollar for climate change mitigation and resilience efforts.
