North civil servants raise concerns on housing entitlements

Concerns have been raised by civil servants in the Northern Division about government quarters entitlements.

Divisional Secretary North Soko Tuima informed Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama during a talanoa session in Labasa last week, many who have had their contracts renewed have been told they’re no longer entitled to live in government quarters.

Tuima says this is sad because majority of the civil servants who work in the North had been transferred there from other parts of the country.

He says they have been told that if a civil servant’s contract is renewed and the post is given back to them, they don’t qualify for a government house or quarters.

Tuima adds, this will also mean that those who used to get a housing allowance, will not receive it anymore.

He says this is because they had reapplied for their post while being in Vanua Levu.

Towards the end of their contracts, civil servants will have their post advertised and they will have to reapply for it.

The Prime Minister responded saying he’s not aware of the changes to the housing policy for civil servants and would seek an explanation from the Ministry of Economy.
