Ministry embarks on CommonSensing Project

The Lands Ministry embarked on a Common Sensing Project aimed at improving resilience towards climate change.

Speaking to geospatial industry experts in Suva today, Minister Faiyaz Koya said it will improve disaster risk reduction and contribute to the sustainable development of the three selected Small Island Developing States – Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Since its inception, a group of scientists representing various fields visited government organizations on a fact-finding mission regarding data availability and capacity level.

“This will be achieved through direct interaction with existing programmes within the Commonwealth Secretariat which includes the Climate Finance Access Hub. In addition, activities will be implemented with the support of national government agencies and the regional Commonwealth structures.”

Meanwhile the Government has been supportive of the geospatial information management initiative as well providing close to $5 million for the development of the VanuaGIS.
