The Ministry of Education is trying to improve education in high schools after poor results in last year’s Exams.

Minister for Education Dr. Mahendra Reddy says, this is critical in order to improve education because of the declining results in the schools around the country.

“Of the entire students of this country, who sat for year 13 Mathematics, only 15.5 percent passed, of the entire students who sat for biology last year, on 14.2 percent passed, of all students who sat for chemistry last year, year 13, 10.4 percent of the students passed.”

Dr. Reddy adds in order to produce better students; teachers need to lay the foundations from an early age.

He says, teachers must be able to reach out to individual students and form a bond which nurtures teaching and learning – rather than standing in a classroom all day without achieving desired results.

The Ministry of Education is responsible for 170 high schools and 700 primary schools all over Fiji.
