The military has been called in to protect a police witness after he was allegedly assaulted by police officers.

Rajneel Singh is recovering in the Lautoka Hospital after he was burnt with a piece of metal.

Acting Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho says soldiers have been stationed at the hospital because Singh has implicated policemen in an alleged plot to destabilize the government.

’’They’re looking after him to keep anybody else out who will have access to him. You understand he’s made allegations against the Police and that’s why I have kept the Police in the Western division away from him and that’s why I’ve sent a team from Suva who are only the Police team that I have allowed to have access to him’’.

Brigadier General Qiliho says he called the military for help after receiving a telephone call from the victim in the middle of the night on Friday.

He adds the military were also closest to the pine plantation area where Singh was abandoned by his alleged attackers.

The Acting Commissioner was in constant contact with Singh since about midnight Friday and kept liaising with the victim for his safety and to get him to hospital.

Police have assured the public that there is no threat to national security after Singh reported finding email correspondence that is seditious in nature.
