Five sentenced for armed robbery

Five men charged with aggravated robbery, assault occasioning bodily harm and theft of motor vehicle have been sentenced by the Lautoka High Court.

Joeli Baleilevuka and Watisoni Saqalagilagi will spend 11 years 4 months in prison with a minimum term of 10 and a half years.

Isaia Bobo, Isimeli Naresia and Sakiusa Tukana will be imprisoned for 12 years 3 months with the same minimum term before parole.

In August last year, the five armed men broke into the home of Rakiraki businessman George Shiu Raj and stole over $120,000 cash, 70 tabuas or whales tooth worth $35,000 and jewellery worth over $20,000.

Raj and his wife were beaten and tied up while the robbers ransacked the house.
Two relatives who live in the same house were met with the same treatment when they came out of their rooms to rescue the couple.

The perpetrators also stole the victim’s twin-cab to make their getaway.
