Fijians learn sea shell crafting

A number of Fijians have been learning how to turn sea shells into jewellery and other accessories which can earn them an income.

A trainer has been sent over by the Indonesian Ministry of .Fisheries to show how the use of simple and often free materials can be beneficial.

Trainer Sri Sulastri says because Fiji attracts tourists these items can be easily sold as souvenirs.

“I would be really happy for this program in the future if this program can be a sustainable program for all the participants and the public here in Fiji to be able to create a sea shell as a signature souvenirs of Fiji in the future."

With her own business in Indonesia, Sea Shell Crafting Trainer Sri Sulastri says sea shells aren’t often seen as a resource material – but that’s exactly what the training was for.
