October 29, 2018 4:32 am

Landing and taking off at the Rotuma Airport will now be smoother and easier following the $12.8 million Rotuma Runway extension.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony today, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says this is not only about paving a new runway, but also paving a new future of connectivity for every Rotuman.

“It was about giving the thousands of Rotumans who have gone on to live elsewhere in Fiji and the world a chance to visit their families, and see their home, with unprecedented ease. It was about making Rotuma feel more connected to the rest of Fiji than at any point in our nation’s history.”

Bainimarama says the project which was headed by China Railway 5 and was completed just over a year, will have a domino effect that will transform the entire travel experience to Rotuma.

The Prime Minister also adds that everyone recognized these problems and for decades, past governments saw the need for an upgrade, but neglected developing the airport.

Bainimarama adds today will also be a day for the people of Rotuma to remember, as the inaugural Fiji Link ATR aircraft landed at the newly extended runaway.
