Education Minister Rosy Akbar has revealed that a lot of teachers have lost their jobs because of using corporal punishment on students.
Speaking to Head Teachers and Principals in Suva, Akbar says they will maintain zero tolerance on corporal punishment.
Akbar says a few teachers were put under the spotlight last year for this practice and school heads must now ensure it is not condoned.
She is also urging all teachers to try and understand the Ministry’s policies.
“A lot of teachers have lost their jobs because of corporal punishment, it’s sad and please emphasize on the corporal punishment policy, zero tolerance for corporal punishment.”
Akbar reveals that the Ministry is also in the process of trying to allocate counsellors to schools in every division.
