Contractors to be involved in dredging of rivers

The Waterways Ministry hopes to engage other contractors to be involved in the dredging of rivers around the country.

Minister responsible, Dr Mahendra Reddy while commissioning the dredging operations for Rewa River on Friday says work will be undertaken from the Toga river mouth to the Nasali river mouth.

The work will involve dredging forty thousand cubic metres of silt from the river during the next two months.

“Our catchment upstream are not able to absorb and hold as much water no as they used to absorb before .This is because of deforestation and agricultural activity upstream over the last three decades.

According to Dr Reddy the last dredging operation was done in 2010 to 2011 where six point three kilometres of the river was dredged by Contractor, China Railways and one point five million cubic meters of silt were removed .

He also says the removal of sediments from upper catchment and river bed silt is very important.
