June 3, 2018 7:32 pm

The Ministry of Employment has confirmed that the construction sector tops the list of complaints received of workers who are not paid accordingly.

Employment Minister Jone Usamate says this involves many of the small construction companies who are sub-contractors.

Usamate says one of the common issue is workers who are not paid overtime hours.

“And now I just have a talk with the director of this area, he pointed out that now we are getting a lot of complaints from the building and civil sector, civil construction and lot of this are from the small sub-contractors who work for the big contractors, things about overtime pay and so forth so number one is the construction sector where we have receive most complaints.”

Usamate says they are working with the Construction Industry Council on ways to solve the issue.

He adds controlling the issuing of construction license to sub-contractors can be the way forward to prevent workers from getting underpaid.
