The Social Welfare Ministry has hired a consultant to assist in the review of legislations on child welfare and protection.

Minister Dr Jiko Luveni says the Adoption of Infants Act, Juveniles Act and the Probation Act is under review.

Dr Luveni says the reviews will provide a more sensitive approach to dealing with juveniles, adoption and greater protection for children in Fiji.

A total of 132 child abuse cases have been recorded in the National Child Welfare Register to date, of which 68 are child sexual abuse cases.

She says under the Child Welfare Decree it’s mandatory that professionals who are aware or come across such cases must report them to the Permanent Secretary for Social Welfare.
