Apted faces life ban on driving

The Suva High Court has issued a fresh sentence to William Apted, which now sees him disqualified from driving for life.

The 85 year-old is charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning death and two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous harm.

Apted is alleged to have driven a vehicle which was involved in an accident that killed a 4 year old girl and put her parents in hospital.

The incident occurred after a morning church service at Raiwaqa, outside Suva.

The initial sentence was a fine of $6,000 and disqualification from driving for two years. It has now been set aside.

The new sentence, passed yesterday is – two years imprisonment suspended for three years, an additional $4,000 fine, to be paid before the 30th of this month and disqualification from driving for life.
