Uphill battle for Fiji Hockey

October 14, 2015 6:44 pm

The Fiji men’s hockey side faces an uphill battle in its quest to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The national side will need to beat world champions, Australia and World Number 7, New Zealand in the Oceania Cup at the end of the month in order to qualify for Rio.

National head coach, Hector Smith says its might seem an impossible task but the side is ready to give it their best shot.

“In our change room, we always say one thing; ‘they are one country, we are one country; if you starting looking up to them, then you’re lost. We are going to play them and we are going to take our chances.”

The Oceania Cup will be held in Statford, New Zealand on October 21st-25th and features Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa.

The 18-member Fiji squad will depart for New Zealand on Sunday with their opening game against Australia to be held next Wednesday.

Uphill battle for Fiji hockey

December 27, 2012 4:00 am

Round Two of the World Hockey Series League in India is up next for Fiji’s men and women.

But it’s going to be an uphill battle with both sides up against some tough opponents like India, Japan and China.

But Fiji men’s coach, Hector Smith says while it will be big games, there’s no telling what Fiji is capable of come February.

“I am fully aware of the size of that stadium. I know the support that India will be getting in that first game and we just need to be ourselves and wear the jersey with pride and play our brand of hockey, We don’t need to go and follow someone else’s plan, we just need to be there and stick to our game plan, put into practice what we’ve learned and we hope it’s good enough.”

Fiji men will be up against India, Ireland, China, Bangladesh and Azerbaijan.

The women will take on Japan, India, Russia, Malaysia and Kazakhstan.
