Uphill battle for Fiji Hockey

The Fiji men’s hockey side faces an uphill battle in its quest to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The national side will need to beat world champions, Australia and World Number 7, New Zealand in the Oceania Cup at the end of the month in order to qualify for Rio.

National head coach, Hector Smith says its might seem an impossible task but the side is ready to give it their best shot.

“In our change room, we always say one thing; ‘they are one country, we are one country; if you starting looking up to them, then you’re lost. We are going to play them and we are going to take our chances.”

The Oceania Cup will be held in Statford, New Zealand on October 21st-25th and features Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa.

The 18-member Fiji squad will depart for New Zealand on Sunday with their opening game against Australia to be held next Wednesday.
