It will be a night that 17-year-old Maikah Dau, will never forget after scoring his first international goal for the Bula Boys in their 3-all draw against the Solomon Islands in the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup in Suva last night.
The youngster and Fiji under-17 captain found the back of the net t to restore Fiji’s lead after the Solomon Islands had drawn level from the penalty spot.
The goal marked another important step in the youngster’s football journey as he follows in the footsteps of his father, former Fiji international and Rewa defender Lorima Dau.
He was part of Bula FC squad in the OFC Professional League, an experience which exposed the youngster to a higher level of competition and provided another platform in his development.
Dau was also recently vice-captain of the Fiji under-19 side at the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship in Samoa before earning another opportunity with the senior national team.
Playing alongside experienced internationals such as Bula Boys captain Roy Krishna, Dau showed confidence on the senior international stage and made his opportunity count.
Krishna opened Fiji’s account in the 26th minute before the Solomon Islands equalised from the penalty spot.
Dau then scored to put Fiji ahead again as the Bula Boys took a 2-1 advantage into the halftime break.
Thomas Dunn extended Fiji’s lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute before the hosts were reduced to 10 men following Tevita Waranivalu’s red card in the 72nd minute.
The Solomon Islands scored twice in the closing stages to secure a 3-3 draw.
Fiji will face Vanuatu in its next MSG Prime Minister’s Cup encounter on Monday at 7pm at the HFC Bank Stadium
