Fiji ready for Cup quarters

Host Australia narrowly beat defending champion Fiji 15-14 to end the first day of the Gold Coast Sevens atop Pool B and unbeaten after three matches alongside Samoa and South Africa.

Australia will face Kenya in the Cup quarterfinals after the Africans drew with England first up Saturday and lost to Samoa before downing Spain to advance to the final eight.

The Springboks downed New Zealand 31-21 in the Pool A decider and next face France, which advanced from Pool D along with the Argentina Pumas, who take on New Zealand. Pool C winner Samoa meets Pacific rival Fiji.

England, which finished third in last year’s Sevens World Series, missed out on a place in the Cup quarterfinals and will next play Scotland in the Bowl quarters.

Fiji meets Samoa in the second quarter finals at 2:20pm.
